How do we write program notes? Who is the target audience of these notes? Do we really need them at all?
Teaching tip: Talking about structure works really great if you take ten minutes and make a powerpoint, and cue the slides at the appropriate moment. Much better than either talking over, or pausing, the music.
Andrew, this is a great strategy! I was actually thinking of doing something similar (though unnecessarily complicated) by making videos that had structural information synched to music. It’s one of my summer projects. PowerPoint sounds much easier, though. My current task is digging up good Creative Commons recordings (bad ones are easy to find) that I can use so I can put the works on YouTube. Thanks for sharing!
